Amphetamines
   (ATS)
   Or metamphetamines. Known as yaa baa ("crazy medicine") in the Thai language, a flood of amphetaminetype stimulants (ATS) or "speed" pills have entered Thailand from Burma's Shan State since the mid-1990s, to an extent eclipsing the traditional but declining production and export of opium. Total production is estimated at 800 million tablets, most of which are produced in territory controlled by the United Wa State Army. In contrast to opium suppression measures taken by the State Peace and Development Council, the military regime has done little to deal with the problem of amphetamines, which is creating major social and health problems not only in Thailand but in other Asian countries, including Burma itself.
